Suspect shot in Alpharetta during wild Ga. 400 chase

A routine traffic stop on Ga. 400 this afternoon by a Forsyth County Sheriff's deputy took a deadly turn that ended up in an 8-mile chase with the suspect shot twice, his car in flames and wearing an unexplained ankle monitor.

After the deputy pulled over the suspect at the McFarland Road Exit on Ga. 400 shortly before 1 p.m., a check of the name and date of birth turned out to be bogus. As the deputy walked back to the suspect's car to place him under arrest, the man judged to be in his 20s sped off southbound on Ga. 400.

As he fled, he hit four cars before exiting at Windward Parkway. Alpharetta police had already been warned of the pursuit at 1:16. Apparently he turned left onto Westside Parkway headed for Webb Bridge Road. There an Alpharetta police officer was waiting with the patrol car pulled across the road just in case the suspect came that way.

The car headed straight at the officer who then fired "several" shots into the car, according to Alpharetta police spokesman George Gordon. Police said the suspect was later found to have two gunshot wounds to the stomach. However at this point he drove on.

"It was apparent this guy just wasn't going to stop," Gordon said.

The Forsyth deputy, still in pursuit caught up to the man's car on Mid-Broadwell Road where the officer executed what is called a pit maneuver. That is where the officer taps the rear wheel with his own car to send the suspect's car into a spin. This is just what happened.

The suspect's car went down an embankment, slammed into a power pole and burst into flames. That knocked out power service in the vicinity of Lexington Farms apartments.

Police immediately called for EMS assistance which were on the scene at 1:28. The suspect was pulled from the car and taken to North Fulton Regional Hospital's Trauma Center. As the suspect was removed from the car officers noticed he was wearing an ankle monitor which appeared to indicate he may have violated some court order remanding him to his house.

Although conscious, police said he was uncommunicative. No word has been released about his condition nor have any charges been lodged. Police are still working to identify him.
