The Roswell City Council approved the low bidder on a $498,528 project to improve the intersection at Crabapple and Chaffin roads, mainly to put in a right-turn lane on northbound Crabapple onto westbound Chaffin.
The project will receive 80 percent federal aid under the High Priority Project (HPP) funding approved by the Ga. Department of Transportation. Roswell's contribution will be about $98,000.
"Roswell received the funding because it applied as an HPP project several years ago and was accepted by the Ga. DOT," said Transportation Director Steve Acenbrak. "Now that Roswell has done the engineering, arranged right of way and utility relocation and sent out the bids, the project is ready to go forward."
The low bid out of 17 submitted was $498,528 from Baldwin Paving. High bid on the project was $676,609. The project qualified for federal funding in that Crabapple is a connecting road linking Ga. 92-Crossville Road, Acenbrak said.
"It qualifies as a connecting link to the grid system of state routes," Acenbrak said.
In addition, the project will improve drainage from the road in that area and also improve the Strickland Road intersection. Strickland now enters Crabapple at a 45-degree angle. The project will bend Strickland northward to T-up at a 90-degree angle, Acenbrak said.
Construction should begin in the next 30 days to 60 days now that the contract has been awarded. Acenbrak said the work should be phased so that Crabapple will not be closed at any time during construction.
"The entire project may seem expensive, but Roswell is getting a half-dozen benefits from it. In addition to the turn lane for northbound Crabapple and the Strickland Road improvement, the drainage in the area - which is just about nonexistent - will be improved," said Acenbrak. "The road and shoulders will be widened just a little to accommodate some bike lanes, too. It is a residential area."
