Jazz concert series comes to a close in Suwanee

The WJZZ 107.5 Smooth Jazz Concert Series hit a final note for the 2008 season Oct. 3 as concertgoers gathered at Suwanee's Town Center Park.

Keyboardist Brian Clay, trumpeter Melvin Miller, saxophonist Jeff Sparks and a surprise visit by electric violinist Ken Ford closed out the season with back-to-back performances during the "All That Jazz" extravaganza.

Suwanee residents Randal and Diana Hilton said they come to the concert series every year.

"We really enjoy it," said Randal Hilton. "There's a variety of music and a family atmosphere. It's really nice."

The Hiltons said they felt a little sad with this being the final concert of the 2008 series, especially since they didn't get to attend as many concerts this year due to scheduling conflicts.

But Diana Hilton said if the city brings the concert series back again next year, they will definitely attend.

"We always do," she said. "It's relaxing."

"It's Friday night, date night," Randal added.

And for the season finale, the Hiltons brought their daughter, Aubrey Thorne, who said she prefers classic jazz, but she said she still enjoyed the concert.

"It's nice and nostalgic being outside," said Thorne. "It's fun."

Warren Gardenhire, a resident of nearby Snellville, said this was his first season to attend the concert series, and he managed to make it to most of the concerts.

"The sounds of the different musicians are very good," said Gardenhire. "Every time I come I enjoy myself."

This is about the third year for the 107.5 WJZZ Smooth Jazz Concert Series to be held at Town Center Park.

Amy Doherty, event coordinator for the city of Suwanee, said they are in the early planning stages for 2009 events and they hope to bring back the jazz series in some form.

"They are great events that bring folks to visit Suwanee," said Doherty. "And the folks in Suwanee seem to enjoy them as well."
