Forsyth County approves Derrer’s contract

County commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 23 to approve a contract for the new interim county manager.

The Forsyth County Commissioners voted 5-0 to approve the salary for Interim County Manager Doug Derrer, who was hired earlier this year to serve as Deputy County Manager.

Derrer's contract calls for a $130,000 annual salary, which is nearly identical to that of former County Manager Rhonda Poston-O'Connor, who was fired by the board of commissioners earlier this month with a 3-2 vote. She had come under the scrutiny of Commissioners Brian Tam, Linda Ledbetter and David Richard as a result of the county's current approximate $6 million budget deficit combined with the potential necessity of drawing $5 million from reserves to balance the budget.

Poston-O'Connor served as the interim county manager for about 18 months before being promoted to county manager in September 2007. She was the fourth county manager since 2004.

Prior to being hired by Forsyth County, Derrer served 27 years with the Hall County. Derrer served in code enforcement, animal control, E-911, as a public safety director and as a warden as well as other positions.

In other business, the board of commissioners unanimously approved naming Musco Lighting as the sole source of sports lighting in the county. Forsyth County Procurement Director Donna Kukarola said Musco is more expensive up front, but will pay for itself in reduced energy consumption and maintenance.

"The projected savings is $1,350,000 over a 25-year period," she said.

Musco provides controls and a proactive monitoring system supported 24 hours a day.
