Forsyth aims to amp SAT scores

FORSYTH COUNTY -- The SAT is one of the most anticipated (and perhaps dreaded) events during a student's secondary school career. Students study hard to work towards a high score to help them gain college admission, but other students still may need help boosting their score.
The county school system has taken this to heart and unveiled the 2400 Challenge -- a program to raise Forsyth students' SAT scores across the board. As one of the first major projects by new superintendent Buster Evans, the 2400 Challenge is an ambitious project that the district hopes can start progress at an early age.

The High School outlook on prom

Picture this: you waltz into an elegant ballroom, dressed in a Cinderella-esque flowing gown, a handsome escort by your side, and the approving looks from dozens of your glittering peers. Ever since you were a child, this "picture-perfect" evening has been imprinted into your brain as the "one night that will live within you forever." Your high school prom expectations have been formed your very first descriptions of that "magical and unforgettable evening." Naturally, this tidbit of knowledge has come from those slightly past the age of a high school student who likely had memorable experiences at their own proms.

Kids choose texting over talking these days

Kids don't talk anymore. They text. They post things for the world to see on MySpace. They are used to instantaneous communication. They hit SEND and consider themselves "heard."When I was a teenager, communication wasn't so instant. If you called someone and he or she did not answer, you called back later. If the line was busy, you likewise dialed back some other time. My kids don't even know what the busy signal on the phone means. They don't know life without microwave ovens, answering machines or voicemail. We shared one phone line in the "Hippy Ages" as my daughter refers to the 1960s and early 70's. When Mom needed the phone she told me to hang up. With one phone line, and two phones - one in the kitchen and one in their bedroom, conversations were anything but private. They were however two-way.
